The 300 students at Glendaal Elementary School will put forth a collective effort to help the animals at the Animal Protective Foundation (APF) in Glenville during February and March.

Today, Kim Jess, the community outreach manager at the APF, spoke to students about the needs of the animal shelter, located on Maple Avenue. She showed students a Powerpoint of animals that had been adopted from the shelter but told them there are many others.

In general, it costs about $200 to care for each pet at the shelter and the APF typically receives 3,000 animals each year.

Glendaal students will participate in Pennies for Pets to raise money for the shelter. Principal Thomas Eagan said students can bring pennies, nickels, dimes or other money to drop in a jar in the lobby.

"These animals can't buy food or get shelter on their own, they need all of us," Jess told the students.

Gail Yuille, a volunteer at the shelter, brought her three-year-old dog, Buddy, to show the students. She adopted Buddy from the APF.

Students in Suzanne Doyle's grade 1 class and Lisa Coppola's skills class have particpated in Pennies for Pets in the past.
